COMMITMENT TO THE ENVIRONMENT - ACCIONA Trasmediterranea’s
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
ACCIONA Trasmediterranea has implemented an Environmental
Management System (EMS) in accordance with Acciona’s Corporate
Social Responsibility policy, whose commitment is based on
contributing actively to the protection of the environment
preventing pollution and any harm caused to the environment. Thus,
the Company has undertaken to rationalize consumption of natural
resources and energy; to promote the use of the best technology so
they have an ecologically modern and efficient fleet and facilities at
their disposal; to prevent or minimise emissions, dumping, noise and
waste and to promote environmental training for all employees.
The EMS tool is used so that the Company’s processes and activities
are carried out within a framework of respect and environmental
protection. This tool is reflected in a Handbook and Procedures which
describe how the system works in a comprehensive manner plus a number
of entries which show that all the procedures’ prerequisites are being
fulfilled.
ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
ACCIONA Trasmediterranea‘s Environmental Policy comprises the
following basic premises:
- 1. Prevention of pollution.
- 2. Fulfilment of current legislation.
- 3. Commitment to ongoing environmental improvement.

CONTROL OF ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS
The environmental aspects are the elements which derive from ACCIONA
Trasmediterranea’s daily activities, which, if they were not
controlled correctly, could have a negative impact on the Environment.
For this reason ACCIONA Trasmediterranea maintains strict control on
all these aspects, amongst which we mention the following:
- 1. Atmospheric Pollution: emission of gases which are
harmful to the atmosphere, mainly carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and
sulphur dioxide which are controlled by using fuels suitable for
each situation. By means of energy efficiency programmes developed
by the Company fuel consumption decreases every year and therefore
the emission of polluting gases is reduced.
- 2. Water, fuel consumption, etc.: by means of
environmental efficiency campaigns consumption of electricity, water,
fuel etc is controlled in all the company’s facilities and ships.
- 3. Dumping: Many of our ships are equipped with treatment
plants for sewage and have hydrocarbon filter equipment. Those ships
which don’t have these systems carry out exhaustive controls of all
dumping at sea or at land reception facilities.
- 4. Waste: All waste is removed by an authorised manager
for appropriate treatment.
ISO 14.001:2004 CERTIFICATION
The development of ACCIONA Trasmediterranea’s Environmental
Management System led to the obtention of the ISO 14001:2004 standard
in October 2006. The certification, whose scope applies to “passenger
and freight sea transport in the company’s fleet of ships”, also
includes the head and regional offices, workshops, warehouses and the
company’s own maritime stations (Barcelona, Valencia and Las Palmas de
Gran Canaria).
In April 2009, ACCIONA Trasmediterranea obtained the renovation and
widening of the scope of said certification, covering new ships and
various regional offices and workshops which add to the list of the
company’s ships and facilities already included in the system. The
significant improvement of waste management, both in ships and land
facilities, the ongoing updating of legal requirements and the
evaluation of legal fulfilment, as well as the recent inclusion of the
Environmental Management System to the Company’s Intranet, are an
example of the strong points highlighted by the certifying body,
Bureau Veritas, in charge of granting said certification.
